Archbishop of Montevideo
Daniel Fernando Sturla Berhouet, S.D.B., was born on July 4, 1959, in Montevideo. After obtaining a Baccalaureate in Civil Law from the Juan XXIII Institute, he pursued studies in philosophy and educational sciences at the Salesians' Miguel Rúa Institute in Montevideo. He studied theology at the then-existing Mons. Mariano Soler Theological Institute of Uruguay, obtaining a Licentiate in Theology there in 2006. He entered the Salesian Institute of the Uruguay Province in the late seventies. He completed his novitiate in 1979 and made his first religious profession on January 31, 1980. He was ordained a priest on November 21, 1987. As a priest, he held the following roles: Vicar of the Salesian Novitiate and Post-novitiate, Director of the Salesian Aspirancy and Novice Master, Director of the Juan XXIII Pre-university Institute, and Professor of Church History. On October 28, 2008, he was appointed Salesian Provincial (Inspector) for Uruguay, and shortly thereafter, he was elected President of the Conference of Religious of Uruguay. On December 10, 2011, he was appointed Titular Bishop of Felbes and Auxiliary Bishop of Montevideo. Within the Episcopal Conference of Uruguay, he was assigned responsibility for the Department of Missions and the Laity. Daniel Sturla Berhouet, S.D.B., was born on July 4, 1959, in Montevideo. Took possession of the Archdiocese on March 9, 2014. Pope Francis announced his elevation to the cardinalate on January 4, 2015. Created a cardinal in a public consistory on February 14, 2015.
