Bishop of Lomas de Zamora
Bishop Jorge Rubén Lugones, S.J., Bishop of Lomas de Zamora, was born on July 31, 1952, in Veinticinco de Mayo, in the Diocese of Nueve de Julio, where he completed his primary and secondary studies. He qualified as a veterinary surgeon at the University of La Plata. He entered the Society of Jesus on April 22, 1979, and completed his philosophical and theological studies at the Pontifical Faculty of the Colegio Máximo of San Miguel, where he obtained a licentiate in theology. He was ordained a priest on December 3, 1988. He was appointed assistant to the master of novices until 1992 and subsequently parochial vicar of Nuestra Señora de los Milagros in Villa de Mayo. In 1992 he became parish priest of San Francisco Javier in Resistencia, Chaco, and at the same time superior of the adjoining residence. He also served as spiritual director and professor at the interdiocesan seminary of Resistencia, as president of the San Javier Foundation for street children and girls at risk, and as director of the San Ignacio house of spiritual exercises of the Society of Jesus. On June 2, 1999, he was appointed Bishop of Orán. He received episcopal ordination on July 30, 1999, and was installed on August 6, 1999. On October 14, 2008, he was appointed Bishop of Lomas de Zamora, and he was installed on November 22, 2008. Within the Argentine Episcopal Conference he has served as a member of the episcopal commission for indigenous peoples.
