Bishop of Matamoros-Reynosa
Bishop Eugenio Andrés Lira Rugarcía, Bishop of Matamoros-Reynosa, was born on July 24, 1965, in Puebla, in the Archdiocese of Puebla de los Ángeles. He studied philosophy and theology at the Palafoxian Seminary of Puebla and obtained a licentiate in philosophy from the Popular University of Puebla. He was ordained a priest on February 22, 1991. As a priest he served as professor at the Free School of Law of the state autonomous university and at the La Salle Benavente University, both in Puebla, and as president of the diocesan commission for social communications and official spokesman of the Archdiocese of Puebla. He was incardinated in Puebla de los Ángeles on February 1, 1998. On February 24, 2011, he was appointed Titular Bishop of Buxentum and Auxiliary Bishop of Puebla de los Ángeles. He received episcopal ordination on April 12, 2011, at Puebla, with José Víctor Manuel Valentín Sánchez Espinosa as principal consecrator and Norberto Rivera Carrera and Christophe Louis Yves Georges Pierre as co-consecrators. On September 22, 2016, he was appointed Bishop of Matamoros. His episcopal motto is "Jesús, En Ti Confío".
