Abbot of Pannonhalma
Fr. Cirill Tamás Hortobágyi, O.S.B., was born in Nagytálya on 22 February 1959. He entered the Benedictine order and assumed the religious habit on 21 August 1977. He carried out his philosophical and theological studies at the "Saint Gerard Sagredo" Theological School of the archabbey of Pannonhalma. He made his first profession on 6 August 1981 and his solemn profession on 14 August 1985. On 15 August 1984 he was ordained a deacon and on 15 August 1985 he received priestly ordination. From 1983 to 1988 he studied at the "Eötvös Lóránd" University of Budapest, obtaining a degree in biology and geography. He held the following offices: rector of the "Saint Benedict" House of Studies of Budapest and of the Church of Saint Sabine (1988-1989), master of novices (1989-1992); prior of the Benedictine Community of Pannonhalma (1991-1994); director of the Benedictine Lyceum of Pannonhalma (1994-1996), and master of novices (1996-1998). Since 1998 he has served as prior of the archabbey of Pannonhalma. In addition, he is a professor at the Benedictine Lyceum and at the "Saint Gerard Sagredo" Theological School in Pannonhalma, as well as at the "Sapientiana" Theological School in Budapest.
