Bishop of Viana
Emílio Sumbelelo was born on March 5, 1964, in Cubal (Diocese of Benguela). He studied at the seminaries in Benguela and Huambo, and in Rome at the Urbaniana University, where he obtained a doctorate in Canon Law. He was ordained a priest on August 4, 1991, and incardinated into the Diocese of Benguela. His roles included: 1991–93, parochial vicar and head of the Catechists' School; 1995–98, parish priest; 1996–2004, director of the Catechists' School; judicial vicar, member of the College of Consultors, president of the Committee for Evangelization and Catechesis and of the Justice and Peace Committee, and assistant to the diocesan Association of Catholic Jurists; he also collaborates with the Association of Religious Brothers established in the diocese.
