Bishop of Mawlamyine
Msgr. Maurice Nyunt Wai was born on 23 January 1962 in Myaungmya in the diocese of Pathein. After attending the minor seminary and secondary school in Pathein, he continued his studies at the Yangon Major Seminary, while taking distance learning courses in art and science at the University of Yangon (1980-1987). He subsequently specialized at the Alphonsianum Academy in Rome, where he was awarded a doctorate in theology (1997-2002). He was ordained a priest on 11 March 1989 and incardinated in the diocese of Pathein. He has held the following offices: assistant in the parish of Myaungmya (1989-1992), professor in the Pyin Oo Lwin Major Seminary (1992-1997), parish priest in Pathein (2002-2003), rector of the Mayanchaung Minor Seminary (2003-2004), vicar general and parish priest of Saint Peter’s Cathedral Church in Pathein (2005-2013), executive secretary of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Myanmar (CBCM) (2013-2019), parish priest of the Sacred Heart Church (since 2019) and dean of the pastoral zone of Myaungmya. In addition, he is secretary of the Episcopal Council for theological issues.
