Bishop of Pangkalpinang
Bishop Adrianus Sunarko, Bishop of Pangkalpinang, was born on December 7, 1966, at Merauke, in the Archdiocese of Merauke, in Papua. After attending the minor seminary of Mertoyudan he completed his philosophical studies at the Driyarkara School of Philosophy in Jakarta and his theological studies at the Wedabhakti Pontifical Faculty of Theology in Yogyakarta. He made his perpetual profession in the Order of Friars Minor on August 15, 1994, and he was ordained a priest at Yogyakarta on July 8, 1995. He was parochial vicar at Kramat, in the Archdiocese of Jakarta, from 1995 to 1996, and from 1996 to 2002 he studied theology at the Albert Ludwigs University of Freiburg, in Germany. From 2002 he was a lecturer at the Driyarkara School of Philosophy in Jakarta. He was a provincial definitor of his order from 2004 to 2007 and vice-provincial for Indonesia from 2007 to 2009, and from 2010 he served two terms as superior of the Franciscan province of Indonesia. From 2014 he was president of the conference of major superiors of men in Indonesia. On June 28, 2017, he was appointed Bishop of Pangkalpinang, and he received episcopal ordination there on September 23, 2017. His episcopal motto is Lætentur insulæ multae, Let the many islands rejoice.
