Bishop of Peru
Juan Carlos Vera Plasencia, M.S.C., was born in Trujillo, in the Archdiocese of Trujillo (Peru), on June 25, 1961. After completing his primary and secondary education at a public school in Trujillo, he entered the Congregation of the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, where he made his religious profession on August 15, 1984. He completed his studies in philosophy and theology at the "Juan XXIII" Higher Institute (I.S.E.T.) in Lima. He was ordained a priest on July 22, 1988, and held various pastoral roles within the Congregation: parochial vicar, formator and bursar of the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart seminary in Lima, interim superior of the Congregation's Peruvian Region, and rector of the seminary and regional superior of the Peruvian Region of the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. On June 18, 2005, he was appointed Bishop-Prelate of the Territorial Prelature of Caravelí. He received episcopal ordination on August 28 of that same year. He is a member of the Permanent Council of the Peruvian Episcopal Conference.
