DOSITHEUS NOTArAS (1641–1707), patriarch of Jerusalem. Elected Orthodox patriarch of Jerusalem in 1669, at the age of 27, D.’s main concern was to secure the survival of Orthodoxy by publishing. he passed only two years in Jerusalem, for, in order to collect funds he undertook journeys to Asia Minor, the Balkans, Moldavia-Valachia and Russia. In March 1672 he convoked a synod in Jerusalem, which left a Confession known as the Confession of D. At first, he sought to save the *Orthodox Confession of Peter *Moghila (d. 1648), but little by little it became clearer that a more thorough exposition of faith was needed. The Confession of D., without using the term, contains the doctrine of purgatory (*Purgatory and the Intermediate State), which he later recanted (1690), and the doctrine of *transubstantiation of St Thomas *Aquinas (ca. 1225–1274) Yet the three °tomes, in spite of their names – Tome of Reconciliation, Tome of Love, Tome of Joy – are polemical against the Catholic Church and against the Jesuits; among other things, he defends St Gregory *Palamas (ca. 1296–1356) especially as regards the vision of God, against the criticism of the French Jesuit François Richard and, in this sense, goes beyond Moghila, who was favourable to Palamas. D.’s criticism of Protestants is even more severe.
