Archbishop of Eger
Archbishop Csaba Ternyák, Archbishop of Eger, was born on December 4, 1953, at Fertőszentmiklós, in the Diocese of Győr. He made his philosophical and theological studies at the seminary of Győr and then at the Central Seminary in Budapest, taking a doctorate in theology as a student of the Pázmány Péter Academy of Theology, and from 1986 to 1988 he studied dogmatic theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. He was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Győr on June 21, 1979, and took up the office of secretary to the diocesan bishop. From 1988 to 1992 he was rector of the Pontifical Hungarian College in Rome, collaborating at the same time with the broadcasts of Vatican Radio, and he was postulator of two causes of beatification, those of Blessed Vilmos Apor, bishop and martyr, and of Blessed László Batthyány-Strattmann, a layman and physician of the poor. From 1992 to 1997 he was secretary of the Hungarian bishops' conference. On December 24, 1992, he was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of Esztergom and Titular Bishop of Eminentiana, and he received episcopal ordination on January 6, 1993, at Rome, with Pope John Paul II as principal consecrator and Giovanni Battista Re and Justin Francis Rigali as co-consecrators. He took part as a member of the delegation of the Holy See in the negotiations that led to the accord between the Holy See and Hungary, signed at the Vatican on June 20, 1997. On December 11, 1997, he was appointed Secretary of the Congregation for the Clergy and Titular Archbishop of Eminentiana. On March 15, 2007, he was appointed Archbishop of Eger, and he was installed on June 9, 2007. He was vice-president of the Hungarian Catholic Bishops' Conference from 2010 to 2015 and a member of its permanent council from 2015 to 2020. His episcopal motto is Ipsi gloria in saecula.
