Bishop of Barra
João Batista Alves do Nascimento, C.SS.R., is Bishop of Barra [do Rio Grande], Bahia, Brazil. He was born on 3 February 1972 in Jordânia, Diocese of Almenara, in the State of Minas Gerais. After completing studies in Philosophy and Theology at the Universidade Católica do Salvador in Salvador-BA, he made religious profession on 8 February 1998 in the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer (Redemptorists) and received priestly ordination on 16 December 2001. He held the following offices and undertook further studies: member of the missionary team (2002-2003); formator for the period of aspirancy (2004) and for the Philosophy Seminary (2005-2007 and 2015-2018); vicar of the vice-provincial (2005-2007); licentiate in Spirituality at the Pontifical Theological Faculty and Pontifical Institute of Spirituality Teresianum in Rome (2007-2009); superior of the Redemptorist Vice-Province of Bahia (2011-2014); member of the Council of the Redemptorist Missionaries of Bahia. In addition, he was parochial vicar and responsible for a pastoral area in the Archdiocese of São Salvador da Bahia. At the time of the source biography, he was a member of the Presbyteral Council in the Diocese of Bom Jesus da Lapa and, from 2019, rector of the Shrine of Bom Jesus da Lapa.
