Archbishop of Cascavel
Bishop José Mário Scalon Angonese was born on 1 June 1960 in Unistalda, diocese of Uruguaiana, in the State of Rio Grande do Sul. After completing his studies in philosophy and theology at the major seminary of Viamão of the archdiocese of Porto Alegre, he attended a specialization course in psychopedagogy. He was ordained a priest on 16 December 1989, and was incardinated in the archdiocese of Santa Maria. He has held the following offices: vocational promoter, spiritual director and then rector of the minor seminary, parish priest of Santíssima Trindade in Nova Palma-RS and of Ressurreição in Santa Maria-RS, and rector of the major seminary. He was appointed titular bishop of Giufi and auxiliary of the archdicose of Curitiba on 20 February 2013, and received episcopal ordination the following 28 April. On 31 May 2017 he was transferred as bishop of Uruguaiana. Within the National Conference of Bishops of Brazil, he is a member of the Episcopal Commission for the Laity.
