Archbishop of Calabar
Joseph Effiong Ekuwem was born on December 18, 1949, in Akwa Ibom State, Archbishop Ekuwem grew up in south-eastern Nigeria, where Catholicism was deeply rooted. Education and Formation: He studied philosophy and theology at the seminary and later pursued advanced studies in communication and pastoral theology. Priestly Ministry: Ordained on June 30, 1979, he served in parish ministry, seminary formation, and diocesan administration. He became known for his pastoral leadership and communication skills. Episcopal Appointment: He was appointed Bishop of Uyo in 1989 and later elevated to Archbishop of Calabar in 2013. Current Role: Archbishop Ekuwem is a senior member of the CBCN, contributing to commissions on ecumenism and interfaith dialogue. He collaborates with the CSN in promoting unity and pastoral renewal across Nigeria.
