Bishop of Pinar del Rio
Hernández Ruiz, S.J., was born in Holguín on November 14, 1948. After completing his primary and secondary studies at the seminary in Santiago de Cuba, he moved to the San Cristóbal de La Habana Interdiocesan Major Seminary, where he studied philosophy and theology. He continued his studies in Rome, obtaining a Licentiate in Spiritual Theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University. In 1974, he entered the novitiate of the Society of Jesus and pronounced his final solemn vows in 1985. He was ordained a priest on December 26, 1976. As a Jesuit priest, he held various positions: from 1980 to 1986, he served as Assistant to the Novice Master and collaborated as a priest in the dioceses of Santiago de Cuba and Cienfuegos. From 1988 to 2005, following his studies in Rome, he carried out his ministry in San Cristóbal de La Habana, undertaking multiple roles in pastoral work and spiritual formation—serving as Novice Master, as well as professor and spiritual director at the Interdiocesan Seminary. Since 2003, he has served as Director of the "Pedro Arrupe" Spirituality Center.
