Bishop of Joaçaba
Mário Marquez, O.F.M. Cap., was born on November 23, 1952, in Luzerna, in the Diocese of Joaçaba, State of Santa Catarina. He entered the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin, attending high school at the Santa Maria Seminary in Engenheiro Gutierrez and completing his philosophy studies at the Bom Jesus Capuchin Friary in Ponta Grossa; he studied theology at ITESC (Instituto Teológico de Santa Catarina) in Florianópolis. He made his first profession as a Capuchin Franciscan on February 22, 1976, and his perpetual profession on October 6, 1979. He was ordained a priest on November 22, 1980. As a religious of the Capuchin Province of Paraná and Santa Catarina, he held the following positions: Parish Priest of São Pedro Parish in Rancho Alegre and of Nossa Senhora Aparecida Parish in Uraí (1980–1982); Air Force Military Chaplain and Chaplain of the Curitiba Air Base (1983–1984); Vicar of the parishes of Nossa Senhora das Mercês and Nossa Senhora da Luz in Curitiba (1992–1993); Chaplain of the Second Regional Air Command in Recife (1994–1996); and Parish Priest of the Rainha da Paz Cathedral of the Military Ordinariate of Brazil in Brasília (1996–2006). On May 31, 2006, he was appointed Titular Bishop of Nasai and Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Vitória, in the State of Espírito Santo. He received episcopal ordination on August 6 of that same year.
