Bishop Alfonso García López

Monsignor Alfonso García López was born in Juradó (Chocó) on February 23, 1971. He was ordained a priest on February 21, 1998, by H.E. Msgr. Alonso Llano Ruíz, then Bishop of Istmina-Tadó. He completed his secondary education at the Minor Seminary of Istmina and subsequently studied philosophy and theology at the San Pío X Major Seminary of the Diocese of Istmina-Tadó. He obtained a Licentiate degree in Philosophy and Religious Education from the Universidad Católica de Oriente (Rionegro, Antioquia) in 2000; in 2002, he completed a specialization in Pedagogy and Didactics at the same university; in 2011, a Master’s degree in Business Administration and International Business from the University of Phoenix, Arizona (USA); and in 2012, a specialization in Biblical Studies from Uniclaretiana University. - Parish Priest of Santa Rita de Casia, Río Iró (1998–2000). - Parish Priest of San Roque, Juradó (2000–2001). - Parish Priest of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, Bahía Cupica, Bahía Solano (2001–2002). - Vice-Rector and subsequently Rector of the San Pío X Diocesan Major Seminary (2002–2003). - Student of theological specialization with an emphasis on Priestly Formation at ITEPAL (2004–2005). - Vice-Rector of the San Pío X Diocesan Major Seminary (2006–2008). - Diocesan Head of University Pastoral Care, attached to the Cathedral Parish of Saint Paul the Apostle in Istmina (2009–2010). - Parish Priest of the Cathedral of Saint Paul the Apostle in Istmina (2011–2018). - Vicar General, Exorcist, Moderator of the... On June 14, 2025, Pope Leo XIV appointed him Apostolic Vicar of the Apostolic Vicariate of Guapi. He received episcopal ordination on August 6, 2025, and took canonical possession of the assigned see on August 12 of the same year, accompanied by the Apostolic Nuncio, Paolo Rudelli, and other bishops from the country.
