Bishop of Papantla
Bishop José Trinidad Zapata Ortiz, Bishop of Papantla, was born on May 24, 1959, in San Vicente de Plenitud, Fresnillo, in the Diocese of Zacatecas. He completed his philosophical and theological studies at the Cristo Rey Seminary for adult vocations of the Diocese of Texcoco, and in 1996 obtained a licentiate in biblical theology from the Pontifical University of Mexico. He was ordained a priest for San Andrés Tuxtla on May 9, 1990. After ordination he served as parochial vicar of San Juan Bautista at Catemaco and of the cathedral parish of San Andrés Tuxtla. From 1990 to 1998 he was prefect of discipline and professor at the Cristo Rey Seminary of Texcoco, becoming its rector in 1998. On June 12, 2004, he was appointed Bishop of San Andrés Tuxtla. He received episcopal ordination on July 31, 2004, with Guillermo Ranzahuer González as principal consecrator and Giuseppe Bertello and Sergio Obeso Rivera as co-consecrators. On March 20, 2014, he was appointed Bishop of Papantla. On August 13, 2021, he was appointed Apostolic Administrator of Jalapa, ceasing to hold that office on February 8, 2022.
