Bishop of Livorno
Bishop Simone Giusti, Bishop of Livorno, was born on June 30, 1955, in Cascine di Buti, in the province and Archdiocese of Pisa. He obtained a surveyor's diploma and then a degree in architecture at Florence, after which he entered the Santa Caterina Archiepiscopal Seminary of Pisa, where he completed his studies. He was ordained a priest for Pisa on November 5, 1983, in the cathedral of Pisa. He subsequently served as director of the G. Toniolo University College of Pisa (1983-1985); diocesan assistant of Catholic Action, vice-rector of the diocesan seminary and director of the diocesan vocations centre (1985-1987); and national assistant of Catholic Action for children (1987-1995). In 1994 he was named a chaplain of His Holiness. From 1995 he served as parish priest of Santo Stefano Protomartire at Cascine di Buti, director of the diocesan centre for evangelisation and catechesis, and lecturer in fundamental and special catechetics at the Theological Faculty of Central Italy, and from 1998 as head of the regional commission for the doctrine of the faith. He is the author of numerous articles in pastoral reviews and Catholic periodicals and of publications chiefly on catechetics. On October 18, 2007, he was appointed Bishop of Livorno. He received episcopal ordination on November 10, 2007, at Pisa, with Alessandro Plotti as principal consecrator and Giuseppe Bertello and Diego Coletti as co-consecrators. He was installed as Bishop of Livorno on December 2, 2007.
