Magisterium AI is a tool to provide expert insight on the teachings of the Catholic Church. For more information, please visit our About page.

What Information We Gather

We may gather certain information, either personal or anonymous, based on your activities or data submitted while browsing our website, in the following formats.

Form information

If you submit a mailing list signup form, we collect your email address. If you submit a payment form, we collect necessary billing information from you. All other forms (including the general search prompt, feedback form, etc) are anonymous unless you explicitly enter personal information along with your form submission.

Chat Information

When you submit a chat prompt, the text of your query is sent from your device to our servers, and then transmitted to third-party AI services to generate a response. See "AI Chat Data Usage & Third-Party Sharing" below for more inforamtion on consent, third-party vendors, and how your data is used and shared.

Statistical information

Our website uses the following tools to collect statistical information about browsing behaviour and device or browser information, in order to improve the experience of our website:

Catholic Intelligence and Institutional Services Information

If you access or use Catholic Intelligence, institutional dashboards, diocesan or parish reporting tools, directory features, Vulgate-connected document tools, institutional analytics, or related services, we may collect and process additional information.

This may include institutional affiliation information, selected diocese, parish, ministry, religious institute, or organization, account administration information, role and permission information, invitation status, dashboard activity, parish or institutional report data, directory information, Mass times, ministry information, map or boundary data, uploaded documents, document metadata, usage analytics, exports, and other information submitted by or on behalf of an institutional customer or authorized user.

AI Chat Data Usage & Third-Party Sharing

Usage & Consent

Our application uses third-party AI services (outlined below under "Third-Party AI Provider Data Processing and Storage") to process your search and chat queries and deliver responses.

What data is shared: The text of your chat or search prompt, and in some cases text excerpts derived from your query for search optimization.
Who it is shared with: OpenAI, xAI (Grok), Groq, Google (Gemini), and/or other AI service providers engaged by us from time to time.
Why it is shared: To generate AI-powered responses, perform tool-calling operations, create embeddings, support semantic search, enable document Q&A, and provide AI-assisted responses.

You must acknowledge and consent to this data sharing in the application upon first use of the platform or account signup, before your prompts are transmitted to any third-party AI service. If you do not consent, you will not be able to use our application.

All third-party AI providers used by our application are contractually obligated to handle your data in accordance with their respective privacy policies and provide protection of your data that is equal to or greater than the protections described in this policy, which includes the assurance, either through their default privacy policy or a signed data processing addendum (DPA), that the information sent to any third party AI service will be used for the sole and express purpose of providing the chat functionality and not used for training or other purposes. Links to each provider's privacy policy are listed in the "Where your information is stored" section below.

This data is logged and stored on our servers to help improve the product unless you explicitly opt out. See Accessing your Data below for more information.

If you choose to affiliate your account with an institution, and where applicable opt in during onboarding or in your account settings, your Magisterium AI usage may contribute to anonymized and aggregated Catholic Intelligence or institutional insights as described in the “Catholic Intelligence, Institutional Reporting and Affiliation” section below.

Third-Party AI Provider Data Processing and Storage

Chat and search prompts submitted on our application must be processed by our server and those of our third-party AI providers in order to generate a response. The specific categories of data sent to each provider, and the purpose of the transmission, are described below:

No personally identifiable information (name, email, account ID, device identifiers, etc.) is included in the data sent to these providers unless you voluntarily include such information in your prompt text.

Prompts submitted by users may be processed by our third-party AI providers to generate responses, perform tool-calling, create embeddings, support semantic search, or enable document Q&A, but are not used by those providers to train their models.

Prompts submitted by users may be processed by xAI, Groq or Google to generate responses but are never used to train their models.

We do not intentionally include your name, email address, account ID, or other account identifiers in prompts sent to third-party AI providers unless necessary to provide a specific feature or unless you voluntarily include such information in your prompt or uploaded content.

No identifiable user information is shared with or stored by xAI, Groq, or Google. Longbeard never shares or sells data to third-party services for training purposes.

Each third-party AI provider is required to provide the same or equivalent level of protection for your data as described in this policy, in accordance with their respective privacy policies and data processing agreements.

Chat data may be stored on the third-party provider servers for up to 30 days for the express purposes of providing essential services and/or monitoring for abuse, after which they are deleted.

Internal AI Chat Data Processing and Storage

By default, chat data is saved on our secure servers indefinitely and the data used to help improve the product. Users may opt out of their data being used for our own model training within their account settings or by using the Temporary Chat feature. You can permanently delete chat history data by creating an account and clicking "Clear All Prompts" in your settings.

For users who give consent, Longbeard may use anonymized, aggregated chat data to develop, train, and improve future proprietary models to enhance our services. Longbeard never shares or sells data to third-party services for training purposes.

Longbeard is committed to user privacy, securing all data, and limiting its use strictly to the purposes outlined here. Users retain the right to access, correct, or delete their data directly within their account settings or by making a request to our support team.

Institutional Data and Vulgate-connected documents submitted through Catholic Intelligence or institutional services will not be used to train or fine-tune general-purpose AI models, including Longbeard proprietary models or third-party foundation models, except with the relevant institutional customer’s express written consent. We may use such data to provide, secure, support, troubleshoot, and improve the relevant services, and we may use anonymized and aggregated data to understand usage patterns and improve product functionality, provided it does not identify the institutional customer, authorized users, individuals, or confidential Institutional Data.

Catholic Intelligence, Institutional Reporting and Affiliation

If you choose to affiliate your account with a diocese, parish, ministry, religious institute, or other institution, including by selecting an affiliation during onboarding, using an institutional email domain, accepting an invitation, using an access code, or being added by an institutional administrator, we may process information relating to that affiliation.

This may include your selected institution, name, email address, account status, invitation status, role, permission level, parish or ministry assignment, and similar account administration information. Institutional administrators may be able to view and manage this information for purposes of administering access, permissions, billing, support, and institutional services.

If you opt in during onboarding or in your account settings, your Magisterium AI usage may contribute to anonymized and aggregated Catholic Intelligence insights for your selected institution. These insights may include usage volumes, engagement trends, common topics, search or training keywords, sentiment indicators, representative or illustrative questions, time-period comparisons, and other high-level analytics.

We do not share your private chat history, raw prompts, individual AI inputs, individual AI outputs, or identifiable user-level AI activity with your affiliated institution through Catholic Intelligence insights.

Representative or illustrative questions are generated, generalized, or transformed and are not intended to reproduce verbatim user prompts or identify individual users.

We may apply minimum participation thresholds, suppression rules, aggregation controls, filtering limits, and segmentation restrictions to reduce the risk that individuals or small groups can be identified. Certain insights, reports, filters, or comparisons may be withheld or limited where we determine there is insufficient participation or an elevated re-identification risk.

Institutional customers may also submit or manage institutional data through Catholic Intelligence, including parish or institutional reports, directory information, Mass times, ministry information, map or boundary data, documents, document metadata, dashboard data, and related records. Where you access or use those institutional services, your use may be visible to the relevant institutional customer according to your role and permissions.

You may update or withdraw your Catholic Intelligence insights opt-in in your account settings or by contacting us. Withdrawal will apply prospectively and will not require us to remove your data from anonymized and aggregated insights already generated or shared before withdrawal, where those insights no longer identify you.

We collect cookies, both directly and through trusted third-parties, in order to improve the performance and user experience on our website. Please see our Cookie Policy for more information on usage and to manage your cookie settings.

We sometimes provide links to third-party websites in the references listed to supplement the answer to a search query. While on these sites, these parties may collect information about you. Because we do not control the information policies or practices of these third parties, you should review their privacy policies to learn more about how they collect and use personally identifiable information.

How We Use Your Information

We may use your personal information when we have a valid reason to do so. This includes:

Add you to our mailing list upon form submission;
Process your payment (for paid plan subscribers);
Personalize services in order to provide a better user experience;
Improve our website experience and the quality of AI-generated responses (if explicit consent is given);
Transmit your chat and search prompts to third-party AI services to generate responses (only if personal information is explicitly included by you in a submitted prompt);
Administer institutional affiliations, account permissions, user roles, invitations, and access to Catholic Intelligence or other institutional services;
Generate anonymized and aggregated Catholic Intelligence or institutional insights where users have opted in or where otherwise permitted by this Policy, applicable terms, and applicable law;
Support diocesan, parish, ministry, religious institute, or institutional reporting, dashboards, analytics, directories, Mass time information, ministry information, map or boundary functionality, document search, document Q&A, exports, summaries, and AI-assisted outputs;
Provide customer support, security, auditing, abuse prevention, troubleshooting, service improvement, and enforcement of applicable terms and policies in connection with Catholic Intelligence and institutional services.

You have the right to request that we cease to use or store your information. See Accessing your data for more information.

What We May Share with Affiliated Institutions

Where you affiliate with an institution, we may share account administration information necessary for that institution to manage access to Catholic Intelligence or related institutional services. This may include your name, email address, selected institution, institutional affiliation, role, account status, invitation status, permission level, and parish, ministry, or organizational assignment.

Where you opt in to Catholic Intelligence insights, your Magisterium AI usage may contribute to anonymized and aggregated statistical insights for your selected institution. These insights may include usage volumes, engagement trends, common topics, search or training keywords, sentiment indicators, representative or illustrative questions, time-period comparisons, and other high-level analytics.

We do not share your raw prompts, private chat history, individual AI inputs, individual AI outputs, or identifiable user-level AI activity with affiliated institutions through Catholic Intelligence insights.

We may withhold, suppress, limit, aggregate, or generalize insights, reports, filters, or comparisons where we determine that sharing them could create a risk of identifying an individual or small group.

How We Protect Your Information

We take the greatest care in the security of your submitted information. Our website uses up-to-date Secure Socket Layers (SSL) encryption in order to protect the transmission of your data upon submission to our servers.

We do not directly retain, see or collect any credit card data of paid subscribers. At checkout, we transfer the session to a Stripe Checkout page, which provides a secure and PCI compliant framework for collecting payments without requiring us to process any credit card data directly. Stripe is certified as a PCI Level 1 Service Provider, the most stringent level of certification available in the payments industry, ensuring the safety of all payment data. All subscription management is also securely managed using Stripe's secure, managed customer portal page.

All chat data is securely stored according to the terms outlined in the above section, "AI Chat Data Usage & Third-Party Sharing".

Where your information is stored

Depending on the type of information you have submitted, your data will either be stored securely in a database on our server; or in the database of our trusted third-party partners, if data was directly submitted by you for a particular purpose on our website.

Depending on the type of information you have submitted and the services you use, your data may be stored securely on our servers or processed by trusted third-party service providers engaged to provide the Platform, Catholic Intelligence, institutional services, analytics, payments, infrastructure, communications, customer support, AI functionality, embeddings, document search, or related services:

OpenAI, Groq, xAI, Google, and/or other AI service providers engaged by us from time to time — for model inference, tool-calling, embeddings, semantic search, document search, document Q&A, and AI-assisted responses.
MailChimp – for email mailing list subscriptions.
Groq - For open-source model inference services to help provide prompt responses.
xAI - For model inference services to help provide prompt responses.
Google – for model inference services to help provide prompt responses and generate embeddings, as well as anonymous statistical information, and/or personalized data (for visitors from outside the EU).
Facebook – for statistical and personalization information.
Hotjar – for analytical and statistical information.
Supabase – to store submitted data for model training and improvement, as well as account data, chat data, application data, and related records for operating, securing, supporting, and maintaining the Platform.
Infrastructure, database, storage, authentication, monitoring, support, and analytics providers — to host, secure, operate, monitor, and support Magisterium AI, Catholic Intelligence, institutional dashboards, document tools, and related services.
Stripe - for subscriber payment information.

Information stored by these third-parties is protected by and subject to their privacy policy. You can find their policies at the links below:

International Transfers

Due to the multinational locations of our servers, as well as our third-party partners, any information which you consented to provide may be transferred to a location outside of the country or region you are located in. Data will only be transferred to either: a) our servers; b) trusted third-party partners, as indicated in the above section, which we determine to have adequate transparency and security parameters in place for the protection, storage and accessibility of your data.

Mailchimp Transfers

When you sign up for our mailing list, your information is entered into our Mailchimp account. Mailchimp servers are located in the United States, so even if you are located outside of the United States, your information is transferred to and stored in US based servers, as well as third-party subprocessors who provide servers to Mailchimp. Mailchimp does ensure that their data processing adheres to strict transfer and storage security practices and follows compliance with EU Standard Contractual Clauses, as well as the EU-US Privacy Shield Framework (it is important to note this framework is now invalidated, however there is a new framework in development).

Data breach prevention

Our servers and website infrastructure are kept up to date and secured by a Web Application Firewall (WAF) to protect against a data breach via a third party attack.

In the unlikely event of a breach where your stored data is, or may have been compromised, we will inform you within 24 hours after becoming aware of the data breach, and provide you with our action(s) taken in order to protect your data moving forward.

Note that due to a multitude of different vulnerabilities which are present during the submission of data and are outside of our control (local computer viruses, unsecured/compromised internet connections, etc.), we cannot guarantee and are not responsible for compromised data which occurs during the submission of data and as the result of such factors outside of our control. However, once the data has been submitted and is stored in our infrastructure, we ensure that the data is responsibly held and secured.

Data Controller

The data controller is the organization/entity responsible for the protection of information on and submitted to this website. The Data Controller is Longbeard. Complaints, concerns or requests can be emailed to info@longbeard.com.

How Long We Store Your Data For

Personal information submitted directly on our website through a form indefinitely, until manually deleted via account settings or by request.

Chat data is stored indefinitely if consent is given, otherwise, chat data is only stored as long as necessary to provide the functionality of that particular chat. See above section, "AI Chat Data Usage & Third-Party Sharing" above.

Institutional Data, account administration data, Catholic Intelligence dashboard data, parish or institutional reports, directory information, document metadata, usage analytics, logs, exports, and related records may be retained for as long as necessary to provide Catholic Intelligence or institutional services, comply with legal obligations, resolve disputes, maintain security, support backups, enforce agreements, or as specified in an applicable order form, data processing addendum, institutional agreement, or retention schedule.

Where you withdraw your Catholic Intelligence insights opt-in, withdrawal will apply prospectively. We are not required to remove your data from anonymized and aggregated insights already generated or shared before withdrawal, where those insights no longer identify you.

Anonymized traffic data collected by Google is retained for 14 months before being deleted automatically. More information about Google’s data retention policy can be found here.

Accessing Your Data

If you have submitted personal data on our site or through the Platform, you may have the right to access, correct, delete, or request erasure of this data, subject to applicable law and any applicable institutional, legal, security, backup, or contractual retention requirements.

You may also update or withdraw your Catholic Intelligence insights opt-in in your account settings or by contacting us.

If you have submitted data on our site, you have the right to access, change or request erasure of this data at any time, subject to applicable law and any applicable institutional, legal, security, backup, or contractual retention requirements.
