Archbishop of Burgos
Mario Iceta was born in Gernika (Biscay), in the Diocese of Bilbao, on March 21, 1965. He pursued his theological studies first at the University of Navarra and later at the Diocesan Seminary of Córdoba. On July 16, 1994, he was ordained a priest in the Cathedral of Córdoba, the diocese in which he was incardinated. Msgr. Mario Iceta has served as Archbishop of Burgos since 2020. He holds a doctorate in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Navarra (1995), with a doctoral thesis on Bioethics and Medical Ethics. He also holds a doctorate in Theology from the Pontifical John Paul II Institute for Studies on Marriage and Family in Rome (2002), with a thesis on Fundamental Moral Theology. Additionally, he holds a Master's degree in Economics from the University-Business Foundation of Madrid and the National Distance Education University (UNED) of Madrid (2004) and has been a corresponding member of the Royal Academy of Córdoba (Section of Moral, Political, and Social Sciences) since 1994. He is the founder of the Andalusian Society for Bioethics Research (Córdoba, 1993) and the specialized journal *Bioética y Ciencias de la Salud* (1993). He is a member of the Academy of Medical Sciences of Bilbao (2010) and the Royal Academy of Medicine and Surgery of Seville (2018). In the Diocese of Córdoba, he held various pastoral roles, including parish priest, Episcopal Vicar, Vicar General, Penitentiary Canon, and Archdeacon Canon. In the field of education, he has served as a secondary school Religion teacher (1994–1997); professor of Sacramental Theology, Liturgy, and Liturgical Chant at the Diocesan Seminary of Córdoba (1994–1997); associate professor of Fundamental Moral Theology and Bioethics at the Faculty of Theology of the University of Navarra (2004–2006); and professor of Fundamental Moral Theology, the Morality of the Person, and Bioethics at the same seminary. He is currently a visiting professor at the Faculty of Theology of the University of Navarra and Grand Chancellor of the Faculty of Theology of Northern Spain. On February 5, 2008, he was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of Bilbao, receiving episcopal ordination on April 12, 2008. On August 24, 2010, he was appointed Bishop of Bilbao, and on October 6, 2020, Archbishop of Burgos. He took possession of this see on Saturday, December 5, 2020.
