Archbishop of Bujumbura
Archbishop Gervais Banshimiyubusa, Archbishop of Bujumbura, Burundi, was born on 9 September 1952 in Gisuru, Diocese of Ruyigi. He was ordained a priest by Bishop Joseph Nduhirubusa on 4 July 1981 in Gisuru. He was appointed Coadjutor Bishop of Ngozi on 10 May 2000 and received episcopal consecration in Ngozi on 16 September 2000. On 14 December 2002 the Holy Father entrusted to him full charge of the Diocese of Ngozi, and he was solemnly installed on 22 February 2003. His episcopal motto is L'amour du Christ nous presse, the love of Christ urges us, 2Cor. 5,14. Of his 25 years of episcopate, he spent 18 at the head of various dioceses of the country, including Ngozi, before being appointed Archbishop of Bujumbura and Apostolic Administrator of Ngozi. His canonical possession was celebrated on 5 May 2018, and he became metropolitan archbishop of the Archdiocese of Bujumbura. Through the episcopal office that the Pope entrusts to a bishop as ordinary pastor of a particular church, Bishop Gervais Banshimiyubusa received the full mission of teaching, governing, and sanctifying the people of God, a charge inherited from Christ and transmitted to the apostles.
