Archbishop of Malta
Charles J. Scicluna was born in Toronto, Canada, on May 15, 1959. After completing his secondary education, he studied at the Major Seminary of Malta and attended the local university, obtaining a degree in Civil Law and a Licentiate in Sacred Theology. Subsequently, he earned a degree in Canon Law from the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. He was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Malta on July 11, 1986. Following the completion of his legal studies in Rome, he served—between 1990 and 1995—as Defender of the Bond and Promoter of Justice at the Metropolitan Tribunal of Malta, as a professor of Pastoral Theology and Canon Law at the local Faculty of Theology, and as Vice-Rector of the archdiocese's Major Seminary. During these years, he also contributed to priestly ministry at the parishes of St. Gregory the Great in Sliema and the Transfiguration in Iklin, Malta, and served as chaplain at the local Convent of St. Catherine. In 1995, he entered the service of the Holy See, initially as an Adjunct Promoter of Justice at the Supreme Tribunal of the Apostolic Signatura and later as a Promoter of Justice at the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. During this period, he also taught as a visiting professor at the Faculty of Law of the Pontifical Gregorian University.
