Bishop of Melo
Fr. Pablo Jourdán Alvariza, appointed Titular Bishop of Medianas Zabuniorum and Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Montevideo, was born on January 23, 1964, in Montevideo. He was ordained a priest on November 5, 1995, and belongs to the presbyterate of the Diocese of Minas. Since January 2014, he has served as parish priest of San Carlos Borromeo Parish in the town of José Pedro Varela (Lavalleja). He holds a Doctorate in Medicine from the University of the Republic. He obtained a Bachelor's degree in Theology from the Monsignor Mariano Soler Faculty of Theology of Uruguay and a Licentiate degree in Moral Theology and Spirituality from the University of Navarra. He previously served as parish priest of San Nicolás de Bari Parish in Batlle y Ordóñez. From 2008 to 2018, he was responsible for Biblical Pastoral Ministry in the Diocese of Minas and served three terms as executive secretary of the Commission for Biblical Pastoral Animation of the Episcopal Conference of Uruguay. Since February 2013, he has participated in professional development courses organized by CEBITEPAL (CELAM) in Bogotá. Regarding his episcopal ordination, Msgr. Jourdán was ordained a bishop at the Metropolitan Cathedral of Montevideo on Sunday, September 30, 2018, by Cardinal Daniel Sturla. On September 15, 2021, the Holy Father, Pope Francis, appointed him Bishop of the Diocese of Melo. He took possession of the Diocese on October 30, 2021.
