Archbishop of Oviedo
Jesús Sanz Montes, O.F.M., was born in Madrid on January 18, 1955. After working in banking, he entered the Seminary of Toledo, where he completed his ecclesiastical studies in Philosophy and Theology. He joined the Franciscan Order, made his solemn profession on September 14, 1985, and was ordained a priest on September 20, 1986. He obtained a Licentiate in the Theology of Religious Life from the Pontifical University of Salamanca (1992) and a Doctorate in Spiritual Theology from the Pontifical University Antonianum in Rome (1999). He served as Rector of the Franciscan Seminary in Ávila (1986–1991), Bursar and Provincial Moderator for Ongoing Formation at the Friary of San Antonio in La Cabrera (1991–1994), Guardian of the Friary of the Forty Martyrs in Rome (1994–1997), Superior of San Juan de los Reyes in Toledo and Provincial Councilor of the Franciscan Province of Castile (1997–2000), Professor of Theology at the San Dámaso Theological Faculty in Madrid (1998–2003), Director of the Secretariat of the Episcopal Commission for Consecrated Life (2000–2003), and Superior of the Franciscan Fraternity at the Provincial Curia in Madrid (2000–2003). On October 23, 2003, he was appointed Bishop of the dioceses of Huesca and Jaca—united *in persona episcopi*—and received episcopal ordination on December 14 of the same year.
