Jean-Yves Nahmias was born on September 16, 1957, in Saint-Mandé—a town bordering Paris—within the Diocese of Créteil. During his university studies at Université Paris I, which he completed with a degree in financial law, he was a member of the G.F.U. (*Groupes de Formation Universitaire*). He pursued philosophical and theological studies for two years at the Pontifical Gregorian University as a student at the French Seminary in Rome, and subsequently at the Institute of Theological Studies in Brussels, where he obtained a Licentiate in Theology in 1991. He was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Paris on June 24, 1989. Following his ordination, he served as a parochial vicar at the Notre-Dame de la Croix parish in Paris and as a chaplain for the Jean-Baptiste-Clément, Etienne-Dolet, and Martin-Nadaud public schools (1990–1994). Additionally, from 1992 to 1996, he headed the diocesan Vocations Service and, from 1993, served as Director of the Vocations Office. Later, he served as vicar at the Saint-Ambroise parish and chaplain for the Voltaire and Alain-Fournier public schools (1994–1996); Rector of the Paris diocesan seminary and diocesan delegate for seminarians (1996–2001); and finally, Vicar General of the Archdiocese of Paris (2001–2006). Appointed Titular Bishop of Termini Imerese and Auxiliary Bishop of Paris on June 1, 2006, he was consecrated on September 8 of that year. He is the President of Radio Notre-Dame. Within the French Episcopal Conference, he serves on the Council for Communication.
