Bishop Luis Eduardo González Cedrés

Luis Eduardo González Cedrés was born in Montevideo on January 15, 1972. After studying Systems Engineering, he attended the Faculty of Theology in Montevideo. He was ordained a priest on April 18, 2009, and incardinated into the Diocese of Maldonado-Punta del Este. He held the following positions: Advisor for Youth and Vocational Ministry (2009–2012); Secretary-Chancellor of the Curia (2009–2014); Parish Administrator of *Nuestra Señora del Rosario* (since 2010); Vicar General (2014–2018); and formator (2013–2016) and subsequently Rector (2016–2023) of the Interdiocesan Seminary. On May 11, 2018, he was appointed Titular Bishop of Thugga and Auxiliary Bishop of Montevideo, and received episcopal ordination on June 17, 2018. Within the Episcopal Conference, he heads the Department for Liturgy, Vocations, and Ministries. On September 26, 2023, Pope Francis appointed him Bishop of the Diocese of Mercedes. He took possession of the diocese on Sunday, November 26, 2023—the Solemnity of Christ the King—at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Mercy in the city of Mercedes. He was ordained a deacon on October 11, 2008. In 2014, he was appointed vicar general (2014-01-01).
