Bishop of Nagoya
Bishop Michael Gorō Matsuura, Bishop of Nagoya, was born on September 28, 1952, in Nagoya, in the Archdiocese of Osaka. He entered the minor seminary of Osaka and completed his secondary studies at the Meisei School in Osaka. He then moved to the interdiocesan major seminary of Tokyo and completed his philosophical and theological studies at Sophia University, where he obtained a master of arts in both disciplines. He was ordained a priest for Osaka on March 21, 1981. He then served as assistant parish priest of Koori (1981-1984), of Shukugawa (1984-1986) and of Albeno (1986-1988); rector of the minor seminary of Osaka; a student of English in the United States (1993-1994); a participant in further formation studies in the Philippines (1994-1995); and head of the Sakai-Semoku parish team ministry (1995-1997). From 1997 he served as vicar general of Osaka. On April 19, 1999, he was appointed Titular Bishop of Sfasferia and Auxiliary Bishop of Osaka. He received episcopal ordination on July 17, 1999, with Leo Jun Ikenaga as principal consecrator and Augustinus Jun-ichi Nomura and Paul Yoshinao Otsuka as co-consecrators. On March 29, 2015, he was appointed Bishop of Nagoya.
