Bishop of Miskolc (Hungarian)
Atanáz Orosz was born on May 11, 1960, in Nyíregyháza. He completed his philosophical and theological studies at the Péter Pázmány Catholic University in Budapest, obtaining a doctorate in theology in 1984. On August 4, 1985, he was ordained a priest in Budapest for the Eparchy of Hajdúdorog. From 1985 to 1987, he studied moral theology in Rome at the Alfonsianum while simultaneously attending courses in patristics at the Augustinianum, as well as courses in liturgy and ecumenism at the Pontifical Oriental Institute. From 1991 to 1993, he completed his novitiate at the Benedictine Monastery of Chevetogne (Belgium), remaining there as a monk until 1999. In 1999, together with the current Bishop of Hajdúdorog, Msgr. Kocsis, he founded a monastery of eparchial right in Damóc. On March 5, 2011, the Holy Father Benedict XVI appointed him Apostolic Exarch of Miskolc for Catholics of the Byzantine rite.
