Paulo Cezar Costa is Cardinal-Priest of Santi Bonifacio ed Alessio. Paulo César Costa was born in Valença on 20 July 1967, in the diocese of the same name. He completed higher studies and philosophy at Nossa Senhora do Amor Divino diocesan seminary in Valença, and theology at São José Archdiocesan Seminary in Rio de Janeiro. He then obtained a licentiate and degree in dogmatic theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome from 1996 to 2001. He received priestly ordination on 5 December 1992 and was incardinated in the Diocese of Valença, where he served as parish vicar in Paraíba do Sul in 1993 and parish priest of São Sebastião dos Ferreiros Parish in Valença from 1994 to 1996. From 2001 he was parish priest in Valença and, from 2007, director of the theology department of the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro and rector of Paulo VI Interdiocesan Seminary in Nova Iguaçu.
