Bishop of Uberlândia
Paulo Francisco Machado was born on October 13, 1952, in the town of Andorinhas, in the municipality of Magé, in the State of Rio de Janeiro and the Diocese of Petrópolis. He completed his first- and second-level studies at the Diocesan Seminary of Petrópolis between 1963 and 1970. He pursued studies in philosophy and theology at the Catholic University of Petrópolis (1971–1973) and at the Monastery of São Bento in Rio de Janeiro (1974–1977). While residing at the Pontifical "Pio Brasileiro" College, he attended the Pontifical University "Angelicum" in Rome, where he obtained a Licentiate in Biblical Theology. He was ordained a priest on December 11, 1977, for the Diocese of Petrópolis, where he exercised his ministry: he served as parish administrator of "Santo Aleixo" (1978) and Areal (1978–1984); as a professor of philosophy at the Diocesan Seminary (1978–1984) and of theology at both the Diocesan Seminary and the Catholic University (1982–1984; 1986–2004); as parish priest of the Cathedral (1986–1990); as parish administrator of the Rosário and Itamarati parishes (1990–1992); as deputy director of the Center for Theology and Human Sciences at the Catholic University (1990–1999); as parish priest of Corrêas (1993–2004); and as rector of the Diocesan Seminary of Petrópolis (1999–2004). On May 12, 2004, he was appointed Titular Bishop of Caliabria and Auxiliary Bishop of Juiz de Fora, receiving episcopal ordination on July 25 of that same year.
