Archbishop José María Gil Tamayo

Msgr. José María Gil Tamayo was born on 5 June 1957 in Zalamea de la Serena, Badajoz. He attended the Seminary of Mérida-Badajoz and graduated from the faculty of theology of the University of Navarra. He was ordained a priest on 7 September 1980 and incardinated in the archdiocese of Mérida-Badajoz. After practicing his ministry in a number of rural parishes for nine years, he graduated in information sciences, again from the University of Navarre. In 1992 he was appointed as director of the delegation of the Media and of the Information Office of his diocese. From 1998 to 2011 he was director of the Secretariat of the Commission of the Social Communication Media of the Spanish Episcopal Conference. Since 20 November 2013 he has served as general secretary of the same Conference.
