Bishop of Santarém
Msgr. José Augusto Traquina Marian was born on 21 January 1954 in Alcobaça, in the Patriarchate of Lisbon. After finishing elementary and secondary school, he carried out commercial activity, and also performed his military service. He then attended the Seminary of St. Paul ( Almada ), currently in the diocese of Setúbal, but at the time in Lisbon; the major seminary of Cristo Rei (“ dos Olivais ”) of the Patriarchate of Lisbon and, simultaneously, the theological faculty of the Portuguese Catholic University, where he obtained his licentiate in theology (1985). He was ordained a priest on 30 June 1985 for the Patriarchate of Lisbon, where he held the following positions: member of the formation team of the major seminary of Almada (1984-1992); religious assistant to the scouts in Alcobaça and of the Western Group of the National Scouting Body; pastor of the Most Holy Saviour church in Bombarral and of the Sacred Heart of Jesus at Vale Côvo (1992-2007); canon of the Cathedral of Lisbon (2003); pastor of the “ Nossa Senhora do Amparo ” church in Benfica, Lisbon (2007-2014); vicar forane of the deanery of Lisbon III (2011-2014); coordinator of the permanent secretariat of the diocesan presbyteral council (2011-2014); and spiritual director of the major seminary of Cristo Rei (“ dos Olivais ”) of the Patriarchate of Lisbon (2012-2014). Since 1July 2014 he has served as auxiliary of the Latin Patriarchate of Lisbon.
