Bishop Jose Maria Chaves dos Reis was born on 21 November 1962 at Oeiras do Para, in the then Prelature of Cameta, today the Diocese of Cameta. After elementary studies, he attended courses in philosophy and theology at the Instituto Pastoral Regional - IPAR, in the Archdiocese of Belem do Para. He obtained a licentiate in Religious Sciences at Vale do Acarau University - UVA, in Sobral, Brazil. He was ordained a priest on 21 November 1996. During his priestly ministry he held the following offices: rector of Padre Josimo Minor Seminary in Cameta in 1996-2000; vicar of the prelatic cathedral Sao Joao Batista in Cameta in 2000-2002; pastor of the prelatic cathedral of Cameta in 2002-2006. At present he exercises his ministry as vicar general and rector of Bom Pastor Major Seminary of the Diocese of Cameta.
