Archdiocese of Accra

John Bonaventure Kwofie, C.S.Sp., was born on April 26, 1958, in Powa, in the Diocese of Sekondi-Takoradi. He studied philosophy with the Spiritan Fathers in Isienu-Nsukka, Nigeria (1981–1983). From 1983 to 1984, he completed his pastoral year at Holy Rosary Parish in Suema, in the Archdiocese of Kumasi, Ghana. From 1984 to 1988, he studied theology at St. Paul’s Seminary in Gbarnga, Liberia, obtaining a Bachelor’s degree. He professed religious vows on August 2, 1987, and was ordained a priest on July 23, 1988, in Kumasi. Following his priestly ordination, he held the following positions: 1988–1989: Assistant at St. Joseph Parish, Diocese of Banjul, The Gambia; 1989–1991: Parochial Vicar at Sacred Heart Parish in Bansang, Diocese of Banjul, The Gambia; 1991–1995: Studies in Rome, Licentiate in Sacred Scripture at the Biblicum; 1995–2004: Vice President of the Conference of Major Superiors for Africa (serving two terms); 1995–2001: Superior of the Congregation’s West Africa Foundation; 1995–2002: Pastoral work at St. John Parish (Bohyen-Bantama) and Holy Spirit Parish in the Archdiocese of Kumasi; 2001–2004: Provincial Superior of the Congregation for West Africa; 2002–2004: Pastoral work at St. Catherine Parish and St. Maurice Parish in the Archdiocese of Accra; 2003–2005: Elected Coordinator of the Continental Conference of Major Superiors for Africa; 2004–2012: First Assistant to the Superior General of his Congregation.
