Bishop of Araguaína
Ordained a priest on March 24, 1990, in the Diocese of Rondonópolis (MT), he served as a parochial vicar, diocesan pastoral coordinator, and representative of the priests of the CNBB’s West 2 Region to the National Commission of Priests (1993–1997). He also served as rector of the Jesus the Good Shepherd Major Seminary of the Diocese of Rondonópolis in Várzea Grande (MT); presided over the regional OSIB (Organization of Seminaries and Institutes of Brazil); and coordinated the Vocational Animation Service (SAV) for the CNBB’s West 2 Region (1999). He was a professor at the Dom Aquino Correa Ecclesiastical Study Center (Sedac). In 2006, he left the rectorship of the major seminary in Várzea Grande to become the parish priest of Nossa Senhora Aparecida Parish in Rondonópolis, while also serving as diocesan pastoral coordinator and advisor to various pastoral groups, movements, and services. On March 4, 2009, he was appointed Bishop of the Diocese of Tocantinópolis (TO) by Pope Benedict XVI. He was ordained to the episcopate through the laying on of hands by Dom Juventino Kestering on May 8 of that year, adopting the motto: "I will care for the flock of God entrusted to me" (Ezekiel 34:11). Dom Giovane served as the reference bishop for the Ecclesial Base Communities (CEBs) in the CNBB’s North 3 Region and as a member of the Episcopal Commission for the Laity between 2015 and 2019, with responsibility for overseeing the CEB sector at the national level. On May 7, 2019, during the 57th General Assembly of the CNBB, Dom Giovane was elected president of the CNBB’s Episcopal Pastoral Commission for the Laity.
