Bertram Johannes Meier was born on 20 July 1960 in Buchloe. From 1978 to 1980 he studied at the University of Augsburg and was in the seminary. From 1980 to 1986 he studied at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome and stayed at the Collegium Germanicum. On 10 October 1985 he was ordained a priest in Rome. From 1986 to 1989 he worked on a dissertation in dogmatics on the understanding of the Church of the pastoral theologian and Regensburg bishop Johann Michael Sailer, and received the Dr. theol. degree at the Pontifical Gregorian University. On 15 September 1989 he became chaplain in Neu-Ulm (St. Joh. Bapt.). On 01 September 1990 he was released for training at the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy in Rome. On 10 March 1991 he became chaplain in Neuburg (St. Peter). On 10 October 1991 he became deanery youth chaplain for the Neuburg/Donau deanery. From 1992 to 1996 he was city pastor in Neu-Ulm (St. Joh. Baptist). On 01 May 1993 he became spiritual adviser for the Catholic German Women's Federation in the Diocese of Augsburg. From 1991 to 1996 he was a member of the priests' council. On 15 July 1994 he became dean of the Neu-Ulm deanery. On 25 September 1994 he became regional dean of the Neu-Ulm deanery. On 01 September 1995 he became university chaplain of FH Kempten for the Neu-Ulm department. From 1996 to 2002 he was released for work at the Vatican Secretariat of State, leading the German-language department; he was deputy rector at the Campo Santo Teutonico priestly college in Rome; and he had a teaching assignment in dogmatics and ecumenical theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University. On 06 July 2000 he was appointed monsignor. On 01 August 2000 he was appointed cathedral chapter member and head of the departments for ecumenism and interreligious dialogue; universal Church, mission, and development; religious orders; and the diocesan office for Church vocations and the Pontifical Work for Priestly Vocations (PWB). On 07 December 2001 he was appointed Papal Honorary Prelate. From 2002 to 2011 he was chair of the Working Group of Christian Churches (AcK) Augsburg. In 2005 he was elected representative of the Catholic dioceses in AcK Bavaria. In 2007 he was appointed cathedral preacher.
