Bishop Raymond Sumlut Gam, Bishop of Banmaw, was born on June 19, 1953, in Sadung, in the Banmaw area of the Diocese of Myitkyina. After attending the diocesan minor seminary, he studied philosophy and theology at the major seminary of Yangon. He was ordained a priest on March 29, 1981, in Myitkyina. He then served as assistant parish priest at Myitkyina (1981-1984); rector of the minor seminary of Myitkyina (1984-1987); bursar of the diocese (1987-1991); and parish priest of Panghkat-Banmaw (1991-2001). From 2001 he served as director of the diocesan Caritas and president of the presbyteral council. On August 28, 2006, he was appointed Bishop of Banmaw. He received episcopal ordination on November 18, 2006, at Banmaw, with Salvatore Pennacchio as principal consecrator and Paul Zingtung Grawng and Francis Daw Tang as co-consecrators.
