Bishop Sandro Overend Rigillo

Appointment of the Apostolic Vicar of Benghazi (Libya). The Holy Father has appointed Rev. Fr. Sandro Overend Rigillo, O.F.M., as Apostolic Vicar of Benghazi (Libya); he previously served as Apostolic Administrator *sede vacante et ad nutum Sanctae Sedis* of the same Vicariate. H.E. Msgr. Sandro Overend Rigillo, O.F.M., was born on May 31, 1959, in Sliema, in the Archdiocese of Malta. After entering the novitiate of the Franciscan Friars Minor of the Province of Malta, he made his solemn profession on September 12, 1982. He pursued studies in Philosophy and Theology at the National Institute of Ecclesiastical and Religious Studies in Malta and the Antonianum Theological Institute in Bologna. He was ordained a priest on June 29, 1984. He held the following positions and undertook further studies: Assistant Parish Priest at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Parish in Sliema and Spiritual Director in Maltese state schools (1984–1993); studies for a Licentiate in Theology and Patristic Sciences at the Augustinianum, Rome (1993–1996); Vice-Rector and subsequently Rector of the International College for Franciscan Students at the Antonianum in Rome (1996–2003); Secretary General of the Order of Friars Minor (2003–2006); Assistant Parish Priest at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart in Sliema and Visiting Professor of Patristics at the University of Malta (2006–2008); Minister of the Maltese Province of Friars Minor (2008–2014); Confessor at the Sanctuary of Gethsemane, Jerusalem (2014–2015); from 2015, General Visitor of the Franciscan Province of Saint Casimir in Lithuania; Guardian of the O.F.M. General Curia and Delegate of the O.F.M. Minister General for the Franciscan Missions in Libya (2015–2018); since 2019, Apostolic Administrator *sede vacante et ad nutum Sanctae Sedis* of the Apostolic Vicariate of Benghazi.
