Bishop of Bururi
Salvator Niciteretse was born on August 2, 1958, in Rutwenzi, in the Diocese of Bururi, and entered the Kanyosha Minor Seminary (1975–1979). He obtained a diploma with a humanities focus at the Bujumbura Intermediate Seminary (1979–1982), subsequently completing a Baccalaureate in Philosophy at the Bujumbura Major Seminary (1982–1985) and a Baccalaureate in Theology at the Burasira Major Seminary (1985–1989). He was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Bururi on July 9, 1989. Following his ordination, he held the following positions: 1989–1993: Parish Vicar of Murago, later Parish Priest of the same parish, and National Chaplain of the Xavéri Catholic Action Movement (M.A.C. Xavéri); 1993–1998: Parish Priest of Bururi Cathedral and Diocesan Director of the Pontifical Mission Societies; 1998–2002: Advanced studies at the Pontifical Lateran University, where he earned a Licentiate in Pastoral Theology and a Doctorate in the Social Doctrine of the Church; from 2003: Secretary of the Episcopal Commission for the Apostolate of the Laity; Professor at the Major Seminaries of Gitega and Kiryama; and Representative for Africa at the International Forum of Catholic Action.
