Bishop of Cartago
Monsignor Mario Enrique Quirós Quirós was born on January 19, 1967, in Cartago. His parents are Noé Quirós Solano (of blessed memory) and Emma Luisa Quirós Coto. He was ordained a priest on December 8, 1994, in the Archdiocese of San José by Monsignor Román Arrieta Villalobos (of blessed memory). His episcopal ordination took place on May 13, 2017, at the Cathedral of Cartago; the ordaining bishop was Monsignor José Francisco Ulloa. Monsignor Mario Enrique Quirós completed his primary education at the Eugenio Corrales Bianchini School, his secondary education at the Liceo de Paraíso, and his Humanities course at the University of Costa Rica. Monsignor Quirós entered the National Seminary of Our Lady of the Angels (*Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles*) in Costa Rica for the Introductory Course in 1988, subsequently completing his philosophical and theological studies. As a priest, he provided the following pastoral services: Parochial Vicar at San Isidro de Barbacoas Parish in Puriscal (1995); Parochial Vicar at Our Lady of Mount Carmel (*Nuestra Señora de El Carmen*) Parish in Cartago (1996–1998); Formator and Spiritual Director for the Introductory Course (1998–1999). He obtained a Licentiate degree in Priestly Formation from the Pontifical Bolivarian University in Medellín, Colombia, through I.T.E.P.A.L.–C.E.L.A.M., and served as Formator and Spiritual Director for the Introductory Course (2000–2001). He also served as Formator, Spiritual Director, and Professor of Dogmatic Theology at the National Seminary of Our Lady of the Angels (2007–2013). He has been a doctoral candidate in Dogmatic Theology at the Pontifical University of Salamanca, Spain, since 2013, residing at the Sancti Spiritus Parish in Salamanca (2013).
