Bishop Luis Alberto Barrera Pacheco

Bishop Luis Alberto Barrera Pacheco, M.C.C.J., Bishop of Callao, Peru, was born on 16 November 1966 in Gorgor, Cajatambo, Diocese of Huacho. He made solemn profession with the Comboni Missionaries on 19 November 1994 and was ordained a priest on 10 June 1995. He completed philosophy and theology studies at the Instituto Superior de Estudios Teológicos Juan XXIII in Lima. He held the following offices: from 1996 to 2000, pastor of Santa Ana in Dekoa, Diocese of Kaga-Bandoro, Central African Republic; from 2001 to 2007, formator of Comboni postulants in Bangui, Central African Republic; from 2011 to 2016, provincial superior of the Comboni Missionaries for Peru and Chile; and from 2012 to 2016, vice president of the Conference of Major Superiors of Religious in Peru. Elected Bishop of Tarma on 25 October 2016, he was ordained bishop on 18 December of the same year and took possession of the diocese that day. In the 111ª Plenary Assembly held from 5 to 9 March 2018, he was elected president of the Episcopal Commission for Family, Childhood, and Life for the term from March 2018 to January 2021. Pope Francis later appointed Bishop Barrera as Bishop of the Diocese of Callao, transferring him from the Diocese of Tarma, where he had been bishop since 2016. He was also reelected president of the Episcopal Commission for Family, Childhood, and Life for the term from March 2022 to January 2025.
