Bishop of Cuenca
José María Yanguas Sanz was born in Alberite de Iregua (in the province of La Rioja and the Diocese of Calahorra y La Calzada-Logroño) on October 26, 1947. He pursued his ecclesiastical studies at the diocesan seminary and was ordained a priest for that same diocese in Logroño on June 19, 1972. He began his studies in Philosophy in 1971 and in Theology in 1974 at the respective faculties of the University of Navarra in Pamplona (Spain), obtaining his doctorate in Theology in 1978 and in Philosophy in 1991 from the same university. He is the author of numerous publications, particularly on moral themes. He served as a chaplain and professor of theology for students in various secular faculties at the University of Navarra (1972–1978; 1980–1986), Secretary of the Department of Theology for University Students (1976–1978), military chaplain (1978–1980), professor of Dogmatic Theology (1976–1981), professor of Ethics and Moral Theology (1981–1989), member of the editorial board of the journal *Scripta Theologica* (1982–1986), Director of Research at the Faculty of Theology of the University of Navarra and Associate Professor of Ethics at the Ecclesiastical Faculty of Philosophy (1988–1989), official at the Congregation for Bishops (1989–2005), and visiting professor at the Pontifical University of the Holy Cross (1990–2005). In Rome, he served as chaplain to the Sisters of the Holy Family of Spoleto and collaborated in pastoral work at the parish of Santa Maria della Divina Provvidenza (1990–2005). On April 20, 2001, he was named a Prelate of Honour of His Holiness.
