Archbishop of Firenze
Gherardo Gambelli was born on June 23, 1969, in Viareggio (in the province and Archdiocese of Lucca) and was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Florence on June 2, 1996. He held the following positions and pursued further studies: Parochial Vicar of Santo Stefano in Pane in Rifredi (1996–2007); Licentiate in Biblical Theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome (2000); Administrator of the Sant’Andrea Parish in Cercina (2000–2006); Doctorate from the Theological Faculty of Central Italy (2007); Moderator of the team of priests (*parroco in solido*) for the parishes of Immacolata and San Martino in Montughi (2007–2011). From 2011 to 2022, he served as a *fidei donum* priest in Chad, where he held the following roles: Parish Priest of Sainte Joséphine Bakhita in the Archdiocese of N’Djaména and Head of Vocations Ministry, teacher at the Saint Luc National Major Seminary in Bakara, and prison chaplain in N’Djaména (2011–2017); Member of the College of Consultors of N’Djaména (2013–2016); Parish Priest of Saint Ignace Cathedral, Head of Youth Ministry, and prison chaplain in the Apostolic Vicariate of Mongo (2018–2022). From 2019 to 2022, he also served as Vicar General. Upon returning to Florence, he became Parish Priest of Madonna della Tosse in Florence in 2023. The Holy Father has accepted the resignation from the pastoral governance of the Metropolitan Archdiocese of Florence presented by His Eminence Cardinal Giuseppe Betori and has appointed Gherardo Gambelli—a priest of the same Archdiocese and until now Parish Priest of Madonna della Tosse in Florence—as Metropolitan Archbishop of Florence.
