Bishop of Grajaú
Monsignor Giuseppe Luigi Spiga is a native of Italy. He was born in Serramanna (SU) on July 29, 1972, the son of Antônio and Lucia Rosária Carcangiu. He was ordained a deacon on June 28, 1997, in Serramanna, Italy, and ordained a priest on October 3, 1998, at the Sant’Ignazio da Laconi parish in Serramanna. From 1992 to 1994, he studied philosophy at the Pontifical Theological Faculty of Sardinia (*Pontificia Facoltà Teologica della Sardegna*), and from 1994 to 1998, he studied theology at the same institution. In November 2008, he was sent as a *fidei donum* missionary from the Archdiocese of Cagliari to the Diocese of Viana (MA). In Italy, he served as a formator at the Archbishop's Seminary of Cagliari (1996–2002); a collaborator at the Sacro Cuore parish in Quartu Sant’Elena (1998–2003); Episcopal Vicar for Social and Labor Pastoral Care (1999–2005); Director of the School of Faith and Political Conscience (1999–2005); Pastor of the San Giorgio Vescovo parish in Donori (CA) (2003–2008); and administrator of the Santa Lucia parish in Barrali (CA) (2006–2007). In the Diocese of Viana (MA), he served as parochial vicar of the Nossa Senhora de Nazaré parish in Viana (2008–2009); pastor of São Sebastião in Matinha (2009–2015); coordinator of the Lakes pastoral area (2013–2015); Episcopal Vicar for the Lakes area (2013–2015); spiritual advisor for the Sobriety Pastoral Ministry (2013–2015); ecclesiastical advisor for Youth Pastoral Care in the Lakes area (2013–2015); and diocesan ecclesiastical advisor for Youth Pastoral Care (2016–2018). Diocesan Coordinator for Priority IV (2013–2015). Episcopal Vicar for Vocational Pastoral Care and Vocation Promoter (2015–2017). Diocesan Administrator from February 2018 to May 2019. President of OSIB Regional NE 5 (2019–2024). Currently serves as Vicar General of the Diocese of Viana (2019) and Rector of the Saint Boniface Major Seminary of the Diocese of Viana (2016). Administrative and Financial Director of the Catholic College of Maranhão (2024). Judge at the Regional Ecclesiastical Tribunal NE 5 (2021). Vice-coordinator of COMIRE Regional NE 5 (2023). Coordinator of Italian *Fidei Donum* Missionaries in Brazil.
