Wilhelm Krautwaschl was ordained in Graz Cathedral on 14 June 2015 as the 58th Bishop of the Diocese of Graz-Seckau and succeeded Bishop Egon Kapellari in this office. His motto is "Deus Caritas est" (God is love! - 1 John 4:16b). Wilhelm Krautwaschl completed his entire schooling in Gleisdorf and was active early in the local parish as an altar server, altar-server group leader, in the youth choir, and in many other functions. After the Matura, he studied theology at the University of Graz from 1981 and entered the Graz seminary. In 1986 he became a Master of Theology with a diploma thesis in Old Testament studies on the Book of Joshua; in 1990 the doctorate followed after a moral-theological dissertation on asceticism in the age of the Enlightenment. During his studies Wilhelm Krautwaschl was involved for several years in the Catholic Children's Movement and was cathedral master of ceremonies for four years. He also completed his pastoral internship in 1989/90 in the Graz Cathedral parish. His ordination as a deacon on 17 December 1989 was followed on 1 July 1990 by priestly ordination through Bishop emeritus Johann Weber. He spent his chaplaincy period in Hartberg; from 1993 he worked in the Knittelfeld parish association, and from 1998 in Bruck an der Mur, where he served for eight years as pastor. Since September 2006 Wilhelm Krautwaschl led the episcopal seminary in Graz and the Augustinum as rector; the Augustinum was established in 2009 by Bishop emeritus Egon Kapellari as a diocesan center for education and vocation. Wilhelm Krautwaschl served as a judge at the Graz diocesan tribunal and as diocesan director of the Canisiuswerk, where he was responsible for vocations ministry. He was also most recently a member of the liturgy commission and led the liturgical-pastoral section. Spiritually, Wilhelm Krautwaschl is at home in the worldwide Focolare Movement founded by Chiara Lubich. His tasks in the bishops' conference are: chair of the Catechetical Commission for Education and School (religious instruction; Catholic schools, after-school centers, and boarding schools; ecclesiastical universities of teacher education; social pedagogy; Catholic kindergartens/early-childhood education; after-school centers and boarding schools; adult education; library work); lay apostolate (Catholic Action Austria (KAOe) with its divisions KABOe/workers, KAVOe/academics, KFBOe/women, KMBOe/men; Catholic Lay Council of Austria/KLROe; Working Group of Catholic Associations/AKV); and Alliance for the Free Sunday.
