Archbishop Charles Duval

Charles Duval, C.Ss.R., is Archbishop of Grouard-McLennan, Alberta, Canada. He was born in Hull, now Gatineau, Québec, on 12 April 1964, the eldest of three siblings. He entered the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer, the Redemptorists, on 18 August 1985, beginning his novitiate at Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré, Québec. He made his first profession of vows on 4 August 1986 and his solemn or perpetual profession on 29 July 1989, both at Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré. He was ordained to the diaconate by Bishop Clément Fecteau on 2 May 1992 in Saint-Augustin-de-Desmaures, Québec, and to the priesthood by Bishop Jean-Marie Fortier on 12 June 1993 in Sherbrooke, Québec. His academic formation includes a bachelor's degree and a master's degree in theology from Université Laval, a college degree from the Séminaire de Sherbrooke, and training in computer science from Bishop's College. He completed specialized studies in faith communication through television and radio at AVEX and Saint Paul University in Ottawa in 1988, a Redemptorist spirituality course in Rome in 2004, and legal training for religious community leaders at Saint Paul University and ATTIR in Ottawa in 2005 and 2006. Since 2015, he has been a regular columnist for Revue Sainte-Anne. Fluent in French and English, he has served in pastoral, missionary, formation, and administrative roles. He completed pastoral internships at Notre-Dame-de-la-Paix Parish in Moncton, New Brunswick, from 1989 to 1990, and Saint-Alphonse d'Youville Parish in Montréal, Québec, from 1990 to 1991. As a deacon, he ministered at Notre-Dame-du-Perpétuel-Secours Parish in Latibolière, Haiti, from 1992 to 1993, before serving as vicar at Notre-Dame-du-Perpétuel-Secours Parish in Hamilton, Ontario, from 1993 to 1998. He was director of the Redemptorist Youth Mission Team from 1998 to 2000 and director of Redemptorist youth and vocational ministry in Saint-Augustin-de-Desmaures, Québec, from 2002 to 2008. During this period, he also served as pastoral animator for the Catholic School Board of Central South District in Toronto from 2000 to 2002. He was local superior and pastor of the Marie-Étoile-de-la-Mer Pastoral Unit in the Diocese of Bathurst, New Brunswick, from 2008 to 2011. He was a member of the Redemptorist General Secretariat for Formation in Rome from 2011 to 2016, while also serving as vice-rector for pastoral ministry at the Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré Shrine from 2011 to 2015. He was provincial superior of the Province of Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré from 2015 to 2019 and provincial superior of the Province of Canada from 2019 to 2023. In 2023, he was appointed local superior and pastor of St. Joseph Parish in Grande Prairie, Alberta. He has participated in several Redemptorist General Chapters, serving as a French-to-English translator at the XXIII General Chapter in Rome in 2003 and the XXIV General Chapter in 2009, and as a voting member of the XXV General Chapter in 2016 and the XXVI General Chapter in 2022.
