Bishop of Győr
Bishop András Veres, Bishop of Győr, was born on November 30, 1959, at Pócspetri, in the Archdiocese of Eger. As a seminarian of that archdiocese he studied theology first at the college of theology of Eger and then at the Academy of Theology in Budapest, and from 1983 to 1988 he was a student of the Pontifical German-Hungarian College in Rome, studying at the Pontifical Gregorian University and then at the Alphonsian Academy, where he obtained a licentiate in moral theology. He was ordained a deacon at Rome on March 8, 1986, and a priest on August 2, 1986. He was chaplain at Mezőkövesd from 1988 to 1990, and in 1989 he obtained a doctorate in theology from the Pázmány Péter Academy of Theology in Budapest. He was prefect and professor of moral theology at the archiepiscopal major seminary of Eger from 1990 to 1996, a lecturer at the faculty of theology of the Pázmány Péter Catholic University in Budapest from 1994 to 1996, rector of the Pontifical Hungarian Institute in Rome from 1996 to 1998, and from 1998 secretary general of the Hungarian bishops' conference. On November 5, 1999, he was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of Eger and Titular Bishop of Cissa. He received episcopal ordination on January 6, 2000, in St. Peter's Basilica in Rome, with Pope John Paul II as principal consecrator and Giovanni Battista Re and Marcello Zago as co-consecrators. On June 20, 2006, he was appointed Bishop of Szombathely, and he took the government of that diocese on August 5, 2006. He was Apostolic Administrator of Pécs from January 19 to April 25, 2011. On May 17, 2016, he was appointed Bishop of Győr, and he was installed on July 16, 2016. He served as president of the Hungarian Catholic Bishops' Conference from 2015 to 2025.
