Bishop of Ica
He was born on February 26, 1962, and around 1981, he began his studies in Philosophy and Theology at the "Santo Toribio de Mogrovejo" Major Seminary in Chiclayo. On December 8, 1986, he was ordained a deacon by Monsignor Ignacio María de Orbegozo y Goicoechea, the second Bishop of Chiclayo. The following year—on that same date, so significant for its Marian devotion—he was ordained a priest in the city of Chiclayo. From that time until 1992, he served as the parish priest of Zaña. He studied Biblical Theology at the University of Navarra (Spain) from 1992 to 1996, earning his doctorate. He also served as the parish priest of the Chiclayo Cathedral, a professor of Sacred Scripture at the "Santo Toribio de Mogrovejo" Diocesan Seminary in Chiclayo, and Rector of the Diocesan Pre-Seminary. On October 31, 2007, His Holiness Benedict XVI entrusted him with the major mission of leading the Diocese of Ica, succeeding Monsignor Guido Breña López, O.P.; on December 8, he received episcopal consecration from Monsignor Juan Luis Cipriani, choosing the phrase "Filius meus est tu" (You are my son)—dedicated to the Blessed Virgin—as the motto for his episcopal coat of arms. At the 100th Ordinary Assembly of Bishops, he was elected President of the Episcopal Commission for Social Pastoral Care. He has served as Vice President of the Board of Directors of Cáritas del Perú. In these roles, he has represented the Episcopal Conference at various regional meetings in Bolivia, Colombia, Brazil, and Honduras.
