Bishop of Karonga
Martin Anwel Mtumbuka was born on August 5, 1957, in Majimbula Village, Rumpi District, in the Diocese of Mzuzu. After completing primary school in Chilulu, he entered the Mzuzu Minor Seminary, where he attended secondary school. He then followed the standard path of preparation for the priesthood at the Kachebere Philosophical Seminary and the Theological Seminary in Zomba. He was ordained a priest on July 31, 1988, and incardinated into the Diocese of Mzuzu. Following his ordination, he held the following positions: 1988–1990: Parochial Vicar at Mzuzu Cathedral; 1990–1993: Rector of St. Patrick’s Minor Seminary; 1993–1997: Master’s studies in Religious Sciences at the Mater Dei Institute, Ireland; 1997–2002: Doctoral studies in Education at the University of London, England; 2002–2005: Rector of Mzuzu Minor Seminary; from 2005: Vice-Chancellor of the Catholic University of Malawi, in the Archdiocese of Blantyre.
