Bishop Călin Ioan Bot

Călin Ioan Bot is Bishop of Lugoj of the Romanians, Romania. Călin Ioan Bot is from Tihău, SJ, and was born on 24 July 1970 in the commune of Surduc, SJ. From 1991 to 1995 he studied theology at the Saint John the Evangelist Theological Institute in Cluj-Napoca. He was ordained deacon on 15 August 1995 in Nicula, CJ, by Archbishop George Guțiu, and on 10 September 1995 was ordained priest in Tihău, SJ, by Bishop Vasile Hossu. From 1995 to 2000 he served as educational director within the Saint John the Evangelist Greek-Catholic Theological Institute in Cluj-Napoca, and from 2000 to 2002 he was interim rector of the same institute. From 2002 to 2003 he followed the course for the formation of seminary formators organized by the Congregation for Catholic Education in collaboration with the institutes of spirituality and psychology of the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. From 2003 to 2005 he followed master's courses in spirituality at the Institute of Spirituality of the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, completing the work Gratuitatea iubirii lui Dumnezeu pornind de la tratatul De Trinitate a Sf. Augustin. From 2005 to 2017 he was eparchial counsellor and rector of the Saint John the Evangelist Eparchial Theological Seminary in Cluj-Napoca. From 2017 to 2020 Msgr. Călin Ioan Bot served as protosyncellus, vicar general, of the Greek-Catholic Eparchy of Cluj-Gherla. On 16.01.2020 the Synod of Bishops of the Romanian Church United with Rome, Greek-Catholic, elected Msgr. Călin Ioan Bot as auxiliary bishop for the Eparchy of Lugoj, and the Holy Father Pope Francis gave his assent to this election on 22 January 2020, assigning him the titular see of Abritto. He was ordained bishop on 21 June 2020 in the Holy Trinity Cathedral of Blaj by the imposition of hands of His Beatitude Lucian Cardinal Mureșan, Major Archbishop of the Romanian Church United with Rome, Greek-Catholic. The co-consecrating bishops were Bishop Alexandru Mesian, Bishop of the Eparchy of Lugoj, and Bishop Claudiu-Lucian Pop, Bishop of the Eparchy of Cluj-Gherla, at that date Bishop of the Curia of the Major Archeparchy. Following the vacancy of the eparchial see of Lugoj, on 16.03.2023 His Beatitude Lucian Cardinal Mureșan appointed Bishop Călin Ioan Bot administrator of the Greek-Catholic Eparchy of Lugoj. His Beatitude Lucian Cardinal Mureșan, as Major Archbishop, after receiving the consent of the Synod of Bishops of the Romanian Church United with Rome, Greek-Catholic, gathered at Blaj in ordinary spring session from 7 to 8 June 2023, and after informing the Apostolic Holy See of Rome, transferred Bishop Ioan Călin Bot, then titular bishop of Abritto and administrator of the Eparchy of Lugoj, to the office of eparchial bishop of the Eparchy of Lugoj. Vatican confirmation from the Holy Father Pope Francis was announced on 15 June 2023.
